Building upwards: "A strong option" for high-density cities

The concept of building vertical cities as a solution to address rapid urbanization "has become a very popular one," Mercedes Martty writes. The Mirador building in Madrid, designed by MVRDV, is one of many structures that used the vertical city concept. "It is important to look at how high-density cities are created in the future and the impact they will have on the natural environment," Martty asserts. "Three-dimensional, vertical urbanism has not yet become de rigeur, but as planners seek solutions to density issues, it provides a strong option going forward."
