D.C. requires insurers to cover gender reassignment surgery

Washington, D.C.'s anti-discrimination laws mean health insurers operating in the district must cover gender reassignment surgery and other treatment for residents diagnosed with gender dysphoria, Mayor Vincent Gray said. The laws would also apply to Medicaid plans, Gray said. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon and Vermont also require coverage of gender reassignment surgery, according to advocacy group GLAAD.
