Maine lawmakers wrangle over higher-education funding

Lawmakers on Maine's Education Committee are asking their colleagues not to cut $5.2 million in higher-education funding in an effort to balance the state budget. State budget writers have proposed cuts in scholarship funds and the elimination of a sales-tax exemption for private colleges and universities. Instead, some legislators are working on proposals to increase work-study funding and are floating other initiatives such as tuition guarantees.
