Wireless carriers say improved indoor location technology is not yet ready

Wireless carriers say the FCC's proposed rule requiring improved indoor location technology for cellphones is not realistic in the near future. The technology still needs improvement, as the best-performing technology only gets indoor locations right about one-third of the time, said Brian Josef of CTIA. Meanwhile, "every PSAP is going to re-outfit their PSAP equipment to not only receive the Z coordinate, and they are having to overhaul all their CADs to have three-dimensional building layouts, so they can correspond that information to the proper floor and the proper suite within an apartment building," he said.
