Medicare chief defends prescription drug benefit

The acting administrator for CMS defended the agency and its prescription drug benefit, saying its costs are much less than was predicted when the law creating it was enacted in 2004. The U.S. comptroller general called the benefit "probably the most fiscally irresponsible" law passed since the 1960s, but Leslie Norwalk noted it covers 90% of Medicare recipients and brought the program in line with modern medical care.
