BA planning for American alliance, greater trans-Atlantic competition

British Airways said Thursday it already has a team working on an extended alliance with American Airlines, although approval of BA's application on the deal by the U.S. Department of Transportation has taken longer than expected. BA said the information-gathering process is "very close to completion," and an answer is expected in September or October. The company also said it plans to focus on gaining more customers in Europe and North America as the weakness of the British pound makes trans-Atlantic flying more appealing.
