Employers should avoid checking out a job candidate's nonbusiness social media activity, such as Facebook, because doing so can lead to problematic assumptions and legal charges of hiring discrimination, says Jennifer McClure, president of Unbridled Talent. It's a good idea, though, to check out professional sites such as LinkedIn and look for "red flags" such as inconsistent information, she says.
