Corporate culture -- "the belief system a company has about itself" -- has a significant, often negative impact on innovation, Jeffrey Phillips writes. "Most cultures exist to protect and defend 'business as usual,' and innovation in inevitably a threat to existing business process." Corporate culture can be changed to be more favorable to innovation, but it takes a concerted effort by executives and managers to do so, he writes.
