Roofs in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin are experiencing a heavy buildup of snow that could lead to leaks. Roof rakes can be used to remove snow and prevent ice dams on homes with low roofs, and de-icing cables can do the same for houses of two stories or more, according to Reuben Saltzman, a home inspector. Some roofing contractors offer roof-shoveling services. Newer buildings that meet construction codes have better insulation to prevent ice dams and are better able to withstand heavy snow loads, said Andy Miller, president and owner of Service Roofing in Waterloo, Iowa.
