AT&T's Donovan talks SDN, new network approach

AT&T envisions a major shift for its infrastructure to a more open, software-based networking model that is more adaptable and less reliant on key vendors for specific technology. John Donovan, senior executive vice president of technology and network operations, said this week that part of the new approach will include opening up the company's network to third parties with application programming interfaces, a change AT&T hopes will speed the approval process for technologies used in its network. "We're doing with the [wide-area network] what the world has done with the data center," Donovan said.
