Some corporate executives had lowly beginnings and held menial jobs before climbing the ladder, writes author William Thorndike. Dell founder Michael Dell's first job was as a dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant, Yahoo's Marissa Mayer got her start as a grocery clerk and Netflix's Reed Hastings worked as a door-to-door vacuum-cleaner salesman. "I loved it, strange as that might sound," Hastings says.
