Geithner seeks dismissal of subpoena in S&P lawsuit

In a court filing Monday, former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner asked a judge to dismiss a subpoena seeking his testimony in a lawsuit between the U.S. and McGraw Hill Financial and its Standard & Poor's unit. "The Supreme Court and other courts have long recognized that high-ranking public officials should be shielded from discovery requests absent extraordinary showings that the discovery is necessary and that all efforts have been made to avoid it and limit its burdensomeness," Geithner said. The companies say the government sued them to retaliate for their downgrading of the U.S. credit rating.
