More districts adopt residency programs to train teachers

Several teacher-preparation programs have launched in recent years that are modeled after residency programs that have long been common for doctors. "That is a huge paradigm shift," said Anissa Listak, founder of Urban Teacher Residency United, which supports 18 residency programs, including the Seattle Teacher Residency program. The Seattle program, which calls for novice educators to work alongside mentors, recently launched an effort to help attract top teacher candidates for the most challenged public schools in the district.
