Smithfield Assessed Damages For Civil Rights Violations

A federal district court jury has found Smithfield Packing, a subsidiary of Smithfield Food, guilty of violating civil rights laws. Smithfield's security force reportedly beat and arrested two union supporters in 1997. Smithfield, one of the largest meat companies in the U.S., and its former security chief were ordered to pay $755,000 in damages.
