Mutual funds wary of performance fees

Performance fees, in which a manager's compensation is tied to a fund's returns, are common among hedge funds but remain rare for mutual funds. Despite the fees' appeal to investors, only around 200 of about 4,000 stock funds have some type of performance fee, according to industry consultant Strategic Insight.
