Federal mediator Sheila Birnbaum said Thursday that all but three of the 95 lawsuits filed by 9/11 families have been settled for roughly $500 million. Birnbaum said many of the settlements hinged on face-to-face meetings where grieving relatives could receive condolences from representatives of the airlines or security companies. "There were lots of tears, even tears of the mediator," Birnbaum said in a report. No trial date has been set in the three remaining cases.
