The most compelling case for a manufacturing renaissance may not be found on Earth but rather on Mars in the form of the Curiosity rover, says Siemens Industry North America chief Helmuth Ludwig. The technological marvel was made possible only by digital simulation that ensured success for its astoundingly complex mission with no margin for error. "When you look back at the last two decades, when you think of manufacturing, you really talked about reducing costs by outsourcing, by looking at the lowest cost labor. But looking forward, we believe that creating a manufacturing renaissance is all about using the most sophisticated software," Ludwig said at last month's 2013 ARC Forum.
