Hubble photos show distant asteroid splitting into pieces

A faraway asteroid has been observed by the Hubble Space Telescope breaking up into several pieces, according to astronomers at the UCLA Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. Asteroid P/2013 R3, about 300 million miles from the sun, was likely weakened by many small collisions with space objects rather than one large collision, says the report published in Astrophysical Journal Letters. The Hubble photographs show that the asteroid broke into at least 10 parts, with each boasting its own dust tail.
