Hard-to-heal fractures may benefit from adult stem cells

Implantable tissue-engineering materials that hold epidermal growth factor molecules appear to make it easier for adult bone marrow stem cells to grow, proliferate and survive, potentially enabling new bone to be made after the transplant, new research shows. Studies are under way in animals to test how well the material may heal fractures.
