American says flight with five passengers was necessary

American Airlines said it made a trans-Atlantic flight from Chicago to London with just five passengers on board because a full load of travelers was waiting at London's Heathrow airport to return to the U.S. Environmental groups have criticized the company for not canceling the flight. "With such a small passenger load, we did consider whether we could cancel the flight and re-accommodate the five remaining passengers on other flights," an American spokesman said. "However, this would have left a planeload of westbound passengers stranded in London Heathrow who were due to fly to the U.S. on the same aircraft."
