Illinois teacher says award helped validate her as an educator

A teacher in Springfield, Ill., who teaches at the same high school she graduated from in 1989, shares her early struggles in school and her feelings of validation that followed after she won the Horace Mann Educator of the Year award in 2008, recognizing the district's best teachers. Tamara Douglass says she is known as a tough teacher and doesn't often get immediate positive feedback from students, so the award validated her teaching efforts.
