RISD working on reassignment plan to begin recalling teachers

Rhode Island's education chief Deborah Gist said teachers at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, who recently received layoff notices because they are not considered "highly qualified" in their current assignments, should not be alarmed. Officials acknowledged that the certification issue is more complicated at RISD, where teachers are expected to earn accreditation in specialties related to students' disabilities, and said they were helping the school develop a reassignment plan to enable a recall of teachers.
