Experts discuss benefits of long-pulsed lasers

The 1,064 nm neodymium:YAG laser is useful in treating port wine stains, spider veins, venous lakes and other deep vascular lesions; laser hair removal; and laser-assisted liposuction, write Drs. Joely Kaufman and Jeremy B. Green, voluntary assistant professors at the University of Miami Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery. "The long-pulsed 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser affords greater depth of penetration than its shorter wavelength and shorter pulse-width counterparts, reaching 5 mm to 10 mm depth when used with epidermal cooling," they write.
