Heirloom apple demand is on the rise

Heirloom apples are becoming more popular among consumers, and chefs ranked them fifth on their list of hot produce trends for 2014, according to the National Restaurant Association. Today's heirloom varieties are most likely a combination of heritage and hybrid apples that have been grown for sweetness and crispness. In Washington state, Red Delicious apples account for the largest market share, but Molly Simpson of the Washington Apple Commission says the market is trending toward "new club varieties" developed specifically for individual suppliers.
