Silicon will be useful for a few more process nodes, after which the semiconductor industry may have to turn to carbon nanotubes and other alternative materials and computing technologies, this analysis notes. "Silicon will probably go down by another three or four [shrinkage steps]," IBM's Supratik Guha said. "After that, though, it’s going to hit a wall."
