United questions DOT grants to Huntsville, Ala., and Knoxville, Tenn.

Under its Small Community Air Service Development Program, the Department of Transportation intends to grant $1 million to Huntsville, Ala., and $500,000 to Knoxville, Tenn. United Airlines is asking the DOT for an explanation, charging the grants could lead to unfair competition because both recipients have suggested the monies will be used to subsidize new low-fare service to Baltimore/Washington Airport.
