California water-intake facility to begin operations

California's $1 billion Freeport Regional Water Project Intake Facility is expected to start operations that will supplement water supplies in the East Bay area. The facility will divert Sacramento River water to a pipeline-and-canal system. The focal point of the facility is the $121 million fish-shaped, concrete pumping station that houses eight 2,000-horsepower pumps.
