Molecular imaging plays a role in lung cancer assessment

Radiologists can improve the treatment of lung cancer by gaining a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the disease through employing histology and looking for specific gene mutations in tumors, according to a review published in the journal Academic Radiology. Imaging technologies, such as dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and 18F-FDG PET, also have the potential to characterize the disease and assess patients' response to treatment, the authors concluded.
