NPD: Retail sales of video game products fell 20% in February

Retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories totaled $1.06 billion in February, a 20% decline from more than $1.3 billion in February 2011, according to The NPD Group. The market research firm estimated that other channels, such as game downloads, rentals and subscriptions, represented an additional $550 million to $600 million in revenue. American retailers last month sold 426,000 Xbox consoles, and Xbox products accounted for $383 million in sales during February, Microsoft reported. NPD said the Xbox 360 was the top-selling console for the seventh consecutive month.
