President Barack Obama started reaching out last week to rank-and-file Republicans in Congress, going beyond the party's leaders, with whom he has rarely been able to reach agreement on taxes and spending. The president's objective is to come up with a new path to cutting the deficit and to find new supporters in Congress who can help him get his proposals written into law, White House officials say.
