Spirit Airlines may trigger a la carte trend in U.S.

Spirit Airline's announcement that it will start charging for refreshments and baggage was called "dead on arrival" by at least one airline consultant, but other U.S. airlines are studying the trend and considering hopping on board. Airlines such as Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Norwegian and Flybe charge for checked baggage, but Spirit is the first U.S. carrier to do so. However, American Airlines and United Airlines are both looking into similar fees.
