Lean manufacturers try to refrain from layoffs

U.S. factories that employ lean manufacturing techniques are finding it difficult to lay off highly trained workers. Although orders at factories have dropped 12.8%, the manufacturing sector has only laid off 9.4% of its work force. Instead of layoffs, companies, such as Parker Hannifin Corp., have eliminated temporary staff and shortened work hours.
