Help wanted: Fla. district seeks new hires in NYC despite layoffs

Officials in Florida's Broward County -- who this past summer laid off 400 teachers and are considering more cuts -- are recruiting teachers from New York City with an advertisement in The New York Times that reads, "TEACH near the BEACH!" District officials say the recruiting effort is intended to help fill critical-shortage areas, such as foreign languages, special education and reading. However, union officials say the effort makes little sense since there is a large pool of laid-off teachers to choose from.
