Number of people seeking assistance paying home-heating bills climbs

As unemployment remains high, record numbers of people are applying for government help with their home-heating bills. In North Carolina, the Social Services' Crisis Intervention Program has seen its caseload of families looking for heating-bill assistance rise 52%. Meanwhile, the percentage of New Jersey residents getting help on their utility bills is expected to climb 31%, to almost double the number of people receiving assistance two years ago.
