Corps nears end of levee-zone tree clearing

A controversial plan to remove trees growing too close to levees in and around New Orleans is nearly finished as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awaits approval of the final phase of the plan. The Corps maintains trees in levee zones can blow over during storms and open paths for water to undermine flood protection barriers. The three-year project has proved unpopular with some residents and some have unsuccessfully attempted to block the tree-removal effort in court.
