Iowa DOT uses variety, native plants to spice up highway landscape

The Iowa Department of Transportation has added more than 38 acres of wildflowers and 3,600 trees to stretches of land alongside Interstate 235 in a $3.3-million project. The DOT favors planting native grasses and plants for low-maintenance greenery and breaks up the landscape design to avoid driver fatigue. The DOT often fields questions from drivers on what types of plants were spotted along the highway.
