Chile earthquake designated "qualified disaster" for tax purposes

An IRS Notice has designated the Feb. 27 earthquake in Chile as a "qualified disaster" for federal tax purposes. Earthquake victims who receive qualified disaster relief payments will not have to pay income tax on those amounts, and private foundations will be allowed to make payments to their affected employees without losing their tax-exempt status.
