IBS does not raise risk of colon cancer or IBD, data show

Irritable bowel syndrome does not raise the risk of polyps, colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, according to a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Researchers said colonoscopies are not required for IBS patients under age 50 unless they have alarming symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss or anemia, bleeding, or a family history of colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or celiac disease.
