SDG&E makes privacy a component of smart-meter strategy

San Diego Gas & Electric is applying an internationally recognized privacy standard to its smart-grid program in an effort to assuage the concerns of some consumers about the nature of the technology. The utility worked with Ontario, Canada's Office of Information and Privacy to adopt "Privacy by Design" and says it will deliver a new online management tool to consumers by May. The standard establishes a set of guidelines for engineers, coders and software designers to apply when creating systems that include default privacy settings and end-user transparency.
