Zoo veterinarians provide specialized care for geriatric animals

Veterinary staff and keepers at the Oregon Zoo have many strategies for assessing and treating the health concerns of geriatric animals. Several animals receive pain medication for arthritis, and special training allows for access to the animals without sedation or anesthesia for examinations, tooth brushing, blood collection and even insulin administration.
