Survey: Almost 30% of food companies lack an allergen management system

Nearly 30% of food manufacturers don't have a corporate allergen management system in place, while 67% said they lack knowledge about internationally accepted allergen action levels, according to an SGS survey that garnered 230 responses from 46 nations. While most markets require the disclosure of allergens that are added to a product, the requirements aren't uniform from country to country, said Evangelia Komitopoulou of SGS. This has complicated the task of identifying allergens, resulting in an increased number of recalls and labeling errors, she said.
