While Bertha, the tunnel boring machine in Seattle, remains idle, crews are at work constructing a double-deck highway entrance and placing an operations building's foundation. However, because the TBM is still not working, about one-third of those working on the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement have been laid off. Lynn Peterson, secretary of the state's Department of Transportation discusses the challenges of the project, and looks at WSDOT's capacity to complete other megaprojects in the state.
