Drug companies encourage patients to take their pills

Facing billions of dollars in lost sales because many people do not take their medicines as often or as long as prescribed, drug companies have launched programs to remind patients to stay current with doses. Roche and its distributor McKesson Corp. hire nurses to call patients with reminders, while firms such as AstraZeneca use television ads to encourage adherence to doctors' prescribing orders.
