Chicago traffic snarled by major roadwork projects

Transportation officials are warning Chicago commuters to prepare for more than a year of traffic jams as the Illinois Tollway system gets its biggest update since it was built in the 1950s. "At the end of this, we'll have a tollway system that is rebuilt with pavement to last another 50 years and, hopefully, more," said spokeswoman Joelle McGinnis. Besides headaches on the tollway, drivers will have to contend with backups on the Edens Expressway, where a $41.8 million repair project will reduce capacity by about one-third.
