Government says U.S. welcomed record number of foreigners in 2007

Carlos Gutierrez, secretary of the Commerce Department, said 56.7 million foreign visitors came to the U.S. last year, exceeding the previous record of 51.2 million in 2000. The Travel Industry Association is disputing the figures. "America is the world travel bargain, and yet 2 million fewer (overseas) travelers visited the United States in 2007 than in 2000," said Roger Dow, president of the TIA.
