Best practices to diagnose, treat streptococcal pharyngitis

The throat culture is the gold standard for diagnosing streptococcal pharyngitis, according to a review of best practices published in American Family Physician. The review also said the rapid antigen detection test has been improved with greater sensitivity and specificity. Penicillin is the treatment of choice, but amoxicillin tastes better and is equally effective, the review says.
