Highway Trust Fund faces shortfall

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Highway Trust Fund relies primarily on gasoline-tax receipts. Those funds have dropped as drivers cut back and that poses a problem for highway construction funds. The DOT will work with states to make sure that "communication links are in place in the event of a potential shortfall," says Lana Hurdle, the acting assistant secretary at the DOT.
