Sources: Hamburg chosen as FDA chief, Sharfstein as deputy

President Barack Obama has picked Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Hamburg, former New York City health commissioner, to lead the FDA and Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Baltimore's health commissioner, as the agency's deputy chief, said people close to the issue. Hamburg and Sharfstein's backgrounds fit the Obama administration's search for leaders who can restore public health as the FDA's core mission, the sources said.
