Why long-term services are important to palliative care

Providing long-term care services for patients at home to assist with daily activities is an essential but challenging part of palliative care, Judy Feder and Dr. Robert Berenson, both fellows at the Urban Institute, write. Insurance coverage for the services, whether private or government-based, often is limited or does not exist, and they propose a Medicare pilot program that would assess the need for long-term services and coordinate them with acute care services.
