Suburban Communities Suffer When Retailers Leave

Communities that rely on retailers to provide jobs and sales tax revenue struggle when those retailers close or go bankrupt, reports say. Big-box retailers often are anchor stores in strip malls or older shopping centers, and, once they leave, the space is typically left vacant for long periods of time. The decrease in foot traffic in the strip malls can lead to a decline in sales for the other, smaller stores in the shopping center.
